I Can Shine Bike Camp
I Can Shine is an organization offering the opportunity to learn how to ride a bicycle for the first time. Last summer was a tremendous success, with 41 kids and adults with disabilities participating.
This summer the camp will run from July 4th to 8th, 2016 at the East End Arena in Winnipeg and is hoping to help 40 riders get up on two wheels.
Learning to ride a bicycle using a roller bike allows the rider to have success early on in the week and are motivated by the encouragement of volunteers.
The riders attend the camp for 75 minutes each day and you can choose one of the 5 sessions that your rider will attend. the first session starts at 8:30am and the last starts at 3:35pm.
It is recommended that a family member or care giver attend the camp each day for a couple of reasons. You may be able to help the volunteers with strategies that work well for your rider. As well as it is a great experience for the families to see there child progress throughout the week.
The rider will need their own bike once they are up on two wheels. This usually occurs on the Thursday or Friday. I Can Shine shares recommendations with participant families regarding on bikes that are easier to learn on. The rider could borrow a bike, or use an existing bike that they have. Ideally, they should have an opportunity to train on the bike that they will be using at home.
The rider requirements are:
- Minimum of 8 years of age
- Able to sidestep to both side
- Have a disability
- Able to attend camp all 5 days
- Able to walk without assistive device
- Maximum weight 220 lbs.
- Willing and able to wear a properly fitted bike helmet
- Minimum inseam of 20” (measure from floor while rider is wearing sneakers)
The cost of this years camp will be $150.
